Year ends

Year begins

We find ourselves together

Continuing on

With life

With love

With each other

Novum Annum.  But who's counting?  The eighth volume, the first newsletter.  Have I really been doing this for seven years now?

At the beginning

Annum Novum

Father out in the street
Throwing a new football to his son;
Jogger running the sidewalk,
Showing off his Christmas outfit;
Everyone’s in recovery
The morning after the holiday,
Relaxing with friends and family.
Doing much of nothing.
We’re in the interregnum
Between next year and the last;
A four step lazy week
Until the new festivities begin:
Champaign, parties, and firecrackers,
Welcoming the games of January.

Cheeseburger, Pepsi No Coke

New year, same as the old year,
Only with bigger numbers
So we know where zero is.

The sun stays put, the earth rotates,
Setting and rising the starlight;
Round and round the planet goes;
Following the sun towards Hercules.

The galaxy spins, core and arm,
Curling overhead at night;
The Milky Way moves
Inevitably towards Adromeda,
No matter what
We might post-philosophize.

Come here sister

Papa's in the swing

He ain't too hip now

but I can dig that new breed babe;

He ain't no drag

He's got a brand new bag

The Feel of It

The city's out of rhythm
-- I can't quite place it --
A post-holiday nervousness
Unconnected to social obligations.
I'm not sure it's the war
Or some general malaise
Spreading from the presidency
To the country as a whole,
Like we're trapped in a moving car
With several hours left to go
And the driver's sneaking whiskey,
Refusing to make a pit stop
Until we reach some destination
That only he seem to know.

Gerald R. Ford
38th President
Age 93

A government big enough to give you everything you want is a government big enough to take from you everything you have.

Our constitution works. Our great republic is a government of laws, not of men.

The Constitution is the bedrock of all our freedoms; guard and cherish it; keep honor and order in your own house; and the republic will endure.

The political lesson of Watergate is this: Never again must America allow an arrogant, elite guard of political adolescents to by-pass the regular party organization and dictate the terms of a national election.

Truth is the glue that holds government together. Compromise is the oil that makes governments go.

The American people want a dialogue between them and their president . . . And if we can't have that opportunity of talking with one another, seeing one another, shaking hands with one another, something has gone wrong in our society.

There are no historic or legal precedents to which I can turn in this matter, none that precisely fit the circumstances of a private citizen who has resigned the presidency of the United States. . . . Many months and perhaps more years will have to pass before Richard Nixon could hope to obtain a fair trial by jury . . . But it is not the ultimate fate of Richard Nixon that most concerns me . . . but the immediate future of this great country . . . . Now, therefore, I, Gerald R. Ford, president of the United States . . . have granted and do grant a full, free and absolute pardon unto Richard Nixon for all offenses against the United States which he . . . has committed or may have committed or taken part in during the period from January 20, 1969 through August 9, 1974.  It can go on and on, or someone must write "The End" to it. I have concluded that only I can do that. And if I can, I must.

Brief Interlude

When I get there, I'll be going,
Before I wear out or get bored;
I find life better if you keep moving,
Rather than present a stationary target
For others to take opportunity.

New Year's Resolutions

Find a new president

Find a new planet

Spend less money than I make

Have the body of an 18 year old

Have the knees of a 30 year old

Write the Great American screenplay

Sell the damn screenplay

Surge troops in Iraq

Withdraw troops in Iraq

End the damn thing one way or t'other

Cross off another dead president
-- Funny how they all look better
When they're gone:
A sitting president is all caught up
In politics and electioneering survival
To ever make a positive impression;
But a decade later, maybe two,
All is forgiven and you wish it were he
Instead of the current one in the White House.

Meanwhile Back at the Clone Factory

Is the bad karma eliminated if you eat the same cloned cow over and over again instead of a new cow at each meal?

Does a cloned animal get a completely new soul or does it possess a duplicate soul of the orginal animal?

Would you go to hell if you married your clone?

If Adolf Hitler were ever cloned, would nuture or nature win out?

How does God tell clones apart?

Would the Trinity make better sense if Jesus and the Holy Spirit were considered clones of God?

Is cloning the sincerest form of flattery?

If life begins at the moment of conception, when does the clock start for a clone?

What is the difference between a third generation clone's genealogy and the British Royal Family's?

Would shepherds know the difference if the sheep was cloned?

A Christimas Eve Observation

Waiting for the kids on Christmas Eve,
Doors open, letting in the breeze,
A global warming winter in Washington D.C.

Porch light on, dog on the ready,
Presents piled up under the Christmas tree,
Stockings, stuffed for son and daughters,
Sitting in a line on the floor
-- No chimney.

which by going into him can defile him;

but the things which come out of a person

are what defile him.

Clone

The FDA says
I'm an approved clone of Sappho,
Safe to be eaten, both juicy and sweet;
My poetry is indistinguisable
From the verses she wrote,
My lyrics are as tasty
As most any from Lesbos;
There is nary an analytical, scientific test
That can tell her from me if I choose,
Exceptin', of course, she spoke Aeolic Greek
And I chose English for my lesbian tongue.
