ruminations
LJ Among the Ruins
What if Jesus were among us,
Hanging with Gautama and Mohammed,
Looking to hook up with Bob Dylan and Moses,
Do you think he would be able
To cure Stephen Hawking,
Bring Einstein back to life and maybe Buddy Holly?
I know what you are going to say,
That will be the day, but hey,
How do you know until you ask?
Maybe today's the day
He changes water into wine,
Cures AIDS, does away with hunger,
And makes the world safe for all humankind.
He's God, afterall,
So what's to keep him from doing good works?
(Unless, of course, the Prime Directive
Pevents him from interferring
With any less developed species.)

The world received proof yesterday that prison does indeed work.
In an interview from the Los Angeles jail
where she is serving a sentence for driving while banned,
celebrity inmate Paris Hilton
claimed a remarkable transformation in her character.
She said she was no longer superficial,
had found God,
wanted to work with sick children
and had not looked in a mirror since entering prison.

persisting memories
In the Shade
There are faces I remember
That resemble those of us
Who are still alive:
Gestures that connect to memories,
That bring back so many loved ones
Who have long since died,
Vanished friends, and even enemies,
Lost to war, old age, and accident;
Christmas and all those holidays
At Grandma’s with the family,
Ravioli’s and cardoon,
And homemade lemon meringue.
Then the familiar face passes,
Down the escalator while I up enter
The bright sunshine of the moment.

The British tried to stabilize Iraq with 125,00 troops
when it was a British Mandate from 1920-1932
and the population was 5 million.
The United States has 150,000 troops there
(some would not be classified as troops, just support services)
and the country has 25 million people.

everyone else is, why not?

Made in America
"It's like America...
I mean this is still where people come to make it.
It's a beautiful idea..."
If there is any purpose in life,
The family is at its center,
An intrinsic core attribute
Of life's sucess or failure.
If the family collapses,
Self-destructs before the children
Are grown and self-supporting,
All that remains are the ruins
Of what might have been but not.
By any rational definition of success,
Tony Soprano has made it:
Keeping his family intact,
Raising his children to adulthood
Without their ending up in jail
Or overdosing on drugs.
No more can be demanded from any parent
Than to provide your children the means
To carry on with life after you've gone.
"Meadow runs inside to join her family,
just in time for dinner."

It's All Right, Ma
Tony Soprano,
Fade to black,
Actually a jump cut
With no known destination;
All the marbles in the air,
All sides against the other,
Everywhere you turn
Someone wants a piece of you.
Aces and eights,
Five card draw,
Everyone everywhere
Bets against your cards,
Winner take all.
Family is everything.

The Finale Seen from The Parallax
Life does not run
In thirteen week segments
With all the loose ends tied
Before the next episode begins.
What problems there were
When you got up this morning
Are most likely still there
When you get back into bed.
Your children are aways your children,
Your enemies hardly ever your friends,
Anyone who thinks they have answers
Most likely does not understand.
Life is not all nice and tidy,
Resolution so seldom occurs,
Conclusions so rarely hold permanent,
Closure comes only after your gone.
Turn the light back on, look around,
Something may be close and gaining;
Finish your dinner, get on with it,
You never know who's coming in the door.

Familia
No matter what,
I will stick to you
like Carmella,
A Sicilian thing,
A woman thing,
Until machine guns
Tear us apart,
Or some mad Rasputin
Blows us away.
Until the ultimate laydown
Takes this world from us,
I am yours.
Get use to it.

Pride festivals are the perfect marriage,
wedding capitalistic intentions and queer dollars into a single political entity
that is slowly changing U. S. politics.
Everyone wants our money; the gay community needs to spend it.
The best way to accomplish that is equality.
This is the reason major corporations support us.
Money talks and homophobia walks.

more persistance.
The Summer I was Nine or Ten
My father was watching when I lost control
Of my 20 inch bike (without the training wheels)
And ran into the pole (or perhaps it was a tree),
Sending me heels over head onto the sidewalk.
I’d like to say I got right back up,
But I didn’t ride that bike again for a couple weeks,
Much to my father’s consternation
And my brother’s tease-filled amusement.
